Building Power: Immigrant New Yorkers Rally Residents to the Polls for Pro-Immigrant Candidates

Immigrant Action hosts all-day action around mid-term elections; rally + canvass launch for Andrew Gounardes and Max Rose

“Trump’s constant attacks on immigrant New Yorkers means that we need strong defenders of our rights and values in both Albany and D.C. Latinx, Arab, and Asian immigrants are helping ensure a brighter future by encouraging immigrant voters to back Max Rose for Congress and Andrew Gounardes for State Senate - true leaders that stand for all New Yorkers. The voice of New York’s immigrant community will be heard in the midterm elections, and our power will be felt at the polls.
— Steven Choi, Executive Director

NEW YORK, NY — Today, the New York State Immigrant Action Fund (Immigrant Action) held a day of action across the NY 11th Congressional district to build power around immigrant civic engagement and drive New Yorkers to the polls.

Throughout the day, Immigrant Action organized residents to canvass for NY State Senate District 22 candidate Andrew Gounardes and NY Congressional District candidate Max Rose. The day of action began in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and concluded in North Shore, Staten Island.

Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York State Immigrant Action Fund, issued the following statement:

“Trump’s constant attacks on immigrant New Yorkers means that we need strong defenders of our rights and values in both Albany and D.C. Latinx, Arab, and Asian immigrants are helping ensure a brighter future by encouraging immigrant voters to back Max Rose for Congress and Andrew Gounardes for State Senate - true leaders that stand for all New Yorkers. The voice of New York's immigrant community will be heard in the midterm elections, and our power will be felt at the polls.”

Background

The New York State Immigrant Action Fund (Immigrant Action) was originally formed in 2010 as a sister organization to the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), a non-partisan 501(c)(3) coalition with 200 member organizations across New York State that does not endorse candidates.

In order to increase the political potency of the immigrant vote, Immigrant Action endorses candidates and elected officials who stand up for immigrant communities and against anti-immigrant opponents. Immigrant Action engages in targeted advocacy on specific immigrant-related issues such as legislative scorecards, pointed advocacy flyers highlighting individual elected officials’ stances, and intensive grassroots and direct lobbying of elected officials.
