NYIC Action Endorses Tiffany Cabán for Queens DA

New York Immigration Coalition’s 501(c)(4) organization mobilizes volunteers to support Cabán in DA race

NEW YORK, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition’s political action organization, New York State NYIC Action announced its endorsement of Tiffany Cabán for Queens District Attorney. NYIC Action’s endorsement process consists of questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, candidate platform evaluations—proposed or envisioned—and a final vote from NYIC Action board members.

Steve Choi, Executive Director of NYIC Action, issued the following statement:

“The story of Queens is the story of immigrants, and no one is better suited to protect and serve immigrant families than Tiffany Cabán. As one of the city's leading immigrants rights advocacy organizations, our work is deeply interwoven into the fabric of the nation's most diverse county, and we look forward to putting that connection to work for Tiffany in the race for District Attorney. Her record of serving immigrant communities and promoting racial, social, and economic justice as a public defender will give a strong voice to all 800 languages spoken across Queens. With each day bringing a fresh wave of attacks on our immigrant communities, it’s more important than ever to have elected officials like Tiffany who will advocate for immigrant rights and work to reform the criminal justice system to stop the over-policing and criminalization that many of our community members experience every day.”

Tiffany Cabán, candidate for Queens District Attorney, said:

“I am proud to receive an endorsement from the New York StateNYIC Action Fund,” said Tiffany Cabán, Queens District Attorney candidate. “I look forward to working with them to advance our shared vision for a criminal justice system that is representative of immigrant voices and responsive to diverse community needs. As Queens District Attorney, I will work with NYIC Action and other advocacy groups to ensure that our immigrant communities have the rights and protections that every New Yorker is owed.”

New York NYIC Action will be galvanizing volunteers from all over the city to canvass for the Cabán campaign.

Background

NYIC Action was originally formed in 2010 as a sister organization to the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), a non-partisan 501(c)(3) coalition with 200 member organizations across New York State that does not endorse candidates.

In order to increase the political potency of the immigrant vote, NYIC Action endorses candidates and elected officials who stand up for immigrant communities and against anti-immigrant opponents. NYIC Action engages in targeted advocacy on specific immigrant-related issues such as legislative scorecards, pointed advocacy flyers highlighting individual elected officials’ stances, and intensive grassroots and direct lobbying of elected officials.

The New York Immigration Coalition’s top legislative priority is to expand driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants and is moving to invest $1 million in a statewide campaign to get it passed this year. The NYIC will be engaging its members in all five boroughs in advocacy efforts to get the bill passed.

Already in place in 12 other states plus D.C., the legislation would allow undocumented immigrants to drive legally while bringing in an estimated $57 million in state and county revenues whilst improving public safety for all drivers.
