New York Immigration Coalition’s 501 (c)4 organization mobilizes volunteers to support Smothers in Common Council race
Buffalo, NY—Today, the New York Immigration Coalition’s political action organization, NYIC Action and OUR CITY Buffalo announced their endorsement of Esther Smothers for Lovejoy District Common Council. NYIC Action and OUR CITY’s endorsement process consists of questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, candidate platform evaluations – proposed and envisioned – and a final vote from board members of NYSIAF.
Steve Choi, Executive Director of NYIC Action, issued the following statement:
“Esther Smothers has long been involved with community activism and youth empowerment efforts in Lovejoy and across the city. She wants to be the people’s voice inside the Council advocating for the kinds of changes that will improve people’s everyday lives. She would like to increase access to affordable housing, provide better education and job opportunities, as well as restrict police cooperation with ICE, among other agenda items. Her experience at city government through the Erie County Legislature alongside her activism, makes her the best advocate for a progressive agenda that can not only improve daily lives, but also reshape the community. With each day bringing a fresh wave of attacks on our immigrant communities and working people, our districts need advocates with a vision for safe, healthy, and equitable communities—we need Esther Smothers for Lovejoy District Common Council.”
